Chelsea star offered escape route – report

LEADER

Legend

Some where very surprised by John Terry’s decision not to extend his Blues career beyond the end of the season. He was apparently offered a one year extension but declined the contract. The Guardian writes:

John Terry to leave Chelsea after refusal of further one-year contract

It seems to us that a player like him has so much more to offer than performances on the pitch.

His influence at that club must be great and the knowledge and experience that he could impart upon the youngsters would surely be well-received.

Like Ryan Giggs at Manchester United, Terry could be phased out of the first team plans over the next few years as others come through. But he would surely be a perfect replacement if there was a short-term injury crisis, even at the age of 37 or 38.

Terry would clearly have liked to continue at the club but perhaps he was also seeking assurances about game time next season which the club couldn’t give. His wages would be another obvious potential stumbling block.

The player himself said:

“It’s not going to be a fairytale ending, I’m not going to retire at Chelsea,”

“I was in last week before the Arsenal game and it’s not going to be extended.

“They said that, when the new manager comes in, things might change but it’s a ‘no’ at the minute. I needed to know now, like I have done every January and sometimes it takes a couple of months to get done. Unfortunately it was a ‘no’.

And The Mirror reports that the Chelsea legend may be offered lucrative contract to play in China.

John Terry has been offered a huge pay day in the Middle East.

Mirror Sport can reveal Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola has sounded out Terry and held secret talks with his advisers about a money-spinning move to Qatar club Al Arabi.

Terry perhaps craves more regular playing time before he hangs up his boots and we could very much imagine him moving to America for a swansong after this season. With Frank Lampard already there perhaps New York City FC might fancy taking him.

Let’s see some of Terry’s better moments for the club.
