Arsenal fans may be a little miffed about the relative lack of transfer activity at the club after coach Arsene Wenger stated earlier this month that:
“My prediction is that this could be one of the most active January transfer windows that we’ve seen.”
Wenger has at least begun to address the rather shallow numbers in the engine room by bringing the coltish promise of Mohamed Elneny to the club.
We wonder, however, whether he will live to regret letting French right-back Mathieu Debuchy leave the club this winter, in a deal to Bordeaux which seems increasingly likely at this point.
Sky Sports reports this evening:
Sky sources: Mathieu Debuchy is expected to finalise a loan deal from Arsenal to Bordeaux later tonight.
The 30-year-old, who has played 27 times for France, is said to be keen to push through a move in order to gain the playing time that he hopes will force the issue in terms of inclusion in the EURO 2016 France squad.
Debuchy has been very unlucky in his time at Arsenal. He looked like a great signing when he was acquired by Arsenal in the summer of 2014.
But the combination of injury and the form of Hector Bellerin has limited him to a scarcely believable 22 appearances in his 20 months at the club. He has only played 12 times in The Premier League.
Arsene Wenger is nothing if not empathetic and although he would probably have wanted to keep the right-back in case of injuries, he has seemingly respected the wishes of the player.
Arsenal fans: Can you imagine the club needing Debuchy for the run-in to the title race or can the likes of Calum Chambers step up to the plate in place of Bellerin if needed?
