With Manchester United fans having to suffer a third season of average football, many were at least hoping for a marquee signing in January to lighten the mood and ignite the team.
But even that may be too much to ask for according to The Mirror:
Manchester United SHELVE January transfer plans amid doubt over Louis van Gaal’s future as manager
Club chiefs are increasingly unsure the Dutchman will stay for next season and they are reluctant to spend big on players his successor may not want
It does seem a bit strange to us that Manchester United haven’t delved into the market so far in this window.
Normally the quality wouldn’t be available at this time of year. But with the glaringly obvious attacking talents of Felipe Anderson and Edinson Cavani ostensibly within reach you would imagine that a club as rich as Manchester United would have a punt on at least one of them to get them into the all-important top four come May.
This could of course still happen and Oliver Kay, of The Times, said in his web chat yesterday that transfer targets will remain the same (or similar) regardless of who is at the helm of the management team.
But Manchester United remain steeped in uncertainty to a degree not seen at Old Trafford in decades.
