Newcastle have this week made two signings that the fans will hope can ignite their season.
Even without the new boys, midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and Henry Saivet there was a much improved display from Steve McClaren’s men at St. James’ Park – albeit against an unusually charitable Manchester United side.
But those two new arrivals may mean that one player makes way, according to Sky Sports. They say that a popular midfielder may be on the move.
Steve McClaren wouldn’t deny last night that Cheick Tiote had played his last game for Newcastle.
But Sky sources understand he will be allowed to leave following the arrival of Jonjo Shelvey amid interest from Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.
Newcastle fans may wish to disagree and Tiote may not have been at his best over the last year. But wouldn’t his battling qualities be highly useful at time when Newcastle are so desperate to get out of the relegation zone?
He gave a really solid and energetic performance from the engine room against the other United on Tuesday evening and looked anything but washed up at 29.
The Ivory Coast international has played 53 times for his country (1 goal) and is a popular dynamo at club level with 141 games and 1 howitzer of a goal in his 5 seasons at the club.
He may not have quite the engine of old but, with Newcastle in need of as much quality as they can get right now, perhaps a summer move would be a better solution for all parties?
