Ahead of the massive fixture with Manchester United, Newcastle look set to complete their second major January signing as surely the most famous Jonjo in the world (Shelvey of course) is in Toon to have his medical.

Sky Sports reports:

Swansea have agreed to sell Jonjo Shelvey to Newcastle for a fee in the region of £12m.

And the 23-year-old England international midfielder is having his medical in Newcastle today.

and The BBC states:

Newcastle United have agreed a £12m fee with Swansea City to sign England midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.

Given Swansea’s own precarious position in the English top tier their acceptance of the bid may come as something of a surprise to Newcastle fans.

But Shelvey hasn’t been a guaranteed starter after a great season last year, with Swans boss Alan Curtis saying recently:

“He wants first team football. It is a big season, coming up into the Euros.

“We can’t quite guarantee him first team football at the moment.”

Shelvey has played 6 times for England and clearly felt that he has a chance of making his way through a crowd of midfielders into the England squad for EURO 2016 if he gets regular football at Newcastle.

And, at his best, he is a marvellous footballer. He moved to Swansea from Liverpool in 2013 and has hit 9 goals in 77 performances for the club.

This could well turn out to be one of the more mutually agreeable transfers of the window. If he hits form Newcastle will possess a player who can break games open with his passing and score spectacular goals. Meanwhile Swansea can reinvest the money in some top attackers.

How Shelvey would have loved to face Manchester United on Tuesday evening. That won’t happen but this deal looks close to a conclusion.

Let’s see Shelvey in action.
