A very interesting news article this.
As even a casual football fan will know, FIFA have been holding their annual awards this week, when professional footballers are asked to cast their votes on the best players and managers in the game over the last year.
When we first saw this bit of speculation we assumed it was just that – speculation.
But The Daily Mail has now gone with the story that:
The England and United captain made Jose Mourinho his first selection, followed by Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola and Chile manager Jorge Sampaoli.
Rooney also chose Lionel Messi and Thomas Muller over Cristiano Ronaldo in the player awards, according to the report.
In what will be viewed by some as a clear message to the out of work Mourinho, Manchester United’s captain has picked The Special One as the best boss of 2015.
Mourinho courted the Manchester United striker in the summer of 2013 and the player arguably wanted to leave Old Trafford after a fall out with Sir Alex Ferguson.
But the newly anointed David Moyes, who gave Rooney his start in football, stood firm in what was possibly his best work for the club.
Rooney clearly admires Mourinho’s drive and hunger and we don’t doubt that he would have a better rapport with the Manchester United players than the current boss.
We have been banging on for weeks about how Manchester United would be foolish not to offer Mourinho the job in a time of great fragility and uncertainty for the club on the pitch at least.
And, reading between the lines here, Rooney may well feel the same.
Manchester United fans: time for Mourinho?
