Ander Herrera gave another one of his virtuoso performances for Manchester United against Everton which again led us to believe that, if he can add consistency to his game, he can become United’s best player.
The Spaniard scored one, assisted another and generally got between the midfield and defence of the opponent to cause havoc all afternoon.
But he was modest as ever and reserved special praise for Wayne Rooney, who got back to goal scoring ways on his old stomping ground.
‘Wayne is our leader,’
‘He is the best English player in English history and we are lucky to have him.’
Rooney has scored 6 goals this term but, with three of those coming in The Champions League qualifying round against Brugge, questions have been asked about how long the Manchester United captain has left at the very top.
But his team mate Herrera says that he’s still the main man at United:
‘When he fights like he did today we can be very proud of him,’ he said. ‘He has always helped me a lot.’
Herrera looked world class against Everton and it is also noticeable that he has bulked up since joining Manchester United in the summer of 2014.
The 26 year old had a really small frame for The Premier League but his shoulders have broadened over the last year and he looks a better player for it.
He’s still susceptible to the odd loss of concentration. But, on this form, he is difficult to leave out of the side and may yet prove to be Manchester United’s most effective number 10.
He was happy with how United reacted to defeat at Arsenal:
‘You have to react like we did,’
‘You have to show to everyone that Manchester United are going to be involved in everything and fight for everything.’
‘We looked full of confidence and were very controlled,’
‘But if we want to be champions then this is not enough we have to keep on playing like this. Now we have to play against Man City in the Premier League and if we want to be the champions then we have to keep playing like this.’
Herrera has played 8 times for Manchester United this season and scored 3 goals. He will be desperate to be involved against CSKA in the week as Louis van Gaal’s continues to search or his strongest XI.
