As pundits go, Ruud van Nistelrooy isn’t a bad person to ask about Manchester United’s front line.
The striker scored 150 goals in just 219 games during a glittering career at Old Trafford.
He was a really good hold up man but his real penchant was for scoring goals and most games would be marked by his name on the scoresheet.
Van Nistelrooy was present at the game between PSV and Manchester United in Holland on Wednesday and he thinks that there is a better option than Wayne Rooney in the Number 9 position.
“It would be a good combination if Martial was up front and Rooney was just off him. That would be a good strike force.”
Van Nistelrooy thinks that Rooney will score goals up top but that isn’t his natural position:
“Wayne Rooney is playing in that position but I don’t think he is an out-and-out striker,”
We agree that Martial looks like a centre forward of the future with his pace and composure in front of goal.
But, when you look at the overall squad the right flank is desperate for pace.
If Martial does play up top with Rooney in behind then United will still look lopsided with Mata on the right.
One possible option would be top reinstall Ashley Young or Antonio Valencia on to the wing.
But we still feel that, while Martial will be great number 9 in future, the best Manchester United XI would currently have a front four of Rooney up top with Martial and Memphis either side and Herrera in the hole.
