Penetration

A really disappointing result for a Manchester United team which had been seemingly making progress as a team before the weekend.

After a superb game on Wednesday, Memphis looked more like Nani than Ronaldo on Saturday as he misplaced virtually every cross that he attempted.

He will have better days.

But, all in all, there is a lack of speed in the build up, a lack of penetration in the final third.

Surely Louis van Gaal has to look at this before the end of the window.

Because, while he has sorted out the defensive side of the team – Manchester United have only conceded one goal in 4 games so far this season – the attack still looks a little toothless.

Of course Manchester United will improve as the forwards get sharper with match fitness. We have no concerns about Wayne Rooney.

And this game will suit Manchester United because Brugge have to attack.

This will leave gaps at the back which Manchester United can exploit.

Because, so far this season, they have had all of the ball and their problem has been breaking teams down.

We think that it’s time to give Herrera and Pereira a chance in this team.

Both were excellent in pre-season and could speed up play.

Manchester United have a two goal cushion and should try out some other combinations offensively.

So here is our, slightly surprising, XI for Manchester United vs Brugge.
