Forget Muller: €80m is peanuts for this perfect, jet-heeled solution in attack for Manchester United

The Perfect solution

All this talk of Thomas Muller to Manchester United is putting me off my breakfast.

Yes this guy is already a serial winner at 25. He scores goals an makes things happen.

But is the gangly and unspectacular German really worth 85m Euros?

Because that is the figure that the tabloids say that Manchester United are willing to pay for the lad.

We weren’t keen on the signing of Di Maria because he has always been a wasteful player.

But at least he had explosive pace off the mark. Muller is no slouch and actually very quick when he gets into his stride.

But we would much sooner go for another jet-heeled performer like Memphis – someone who can turn the game on its head with a moment of explosive magic to get away from his marker. Manchester United look pacier this season with Shaw, Darmian and Depay. But they can use more of it.

One player who ticks all the boxes and can play on the wing or in the hole is the brilliant Frenchman Antoine Griezmann.

He only moved to Atletico Madrid last summer, but such has been his influence – he scored 25 goals in just over 50 games last season – that his release clause has reportedly been increased to 80m.

But, given the option of spending 80m on Griezmann or 85m on Muller, we wouldn’t have a moment of hesitation.

Griezmann is a jet-heeled creator and finisher.

He is clearly watching United as he Tweeted in awe of Wayne Rooney’s backheel during the best move of the match against Brugge.

At 24 he’s still improving but can comfortably play anywhere across the front line. Last season he largely played at number 10 – the position where Manchester United are currently unsettled – but he, Pedro and Depay could interchange to devastating effect behind Wazza.

Unless Manchester United make a big move soon then this one has no chance of coming off.

But, for our money, he’s exactly the sort of player that Manchester United should be looking to acquire in the last couple of week of the window.

They are clearly looking for one more marquee signing – so why not Griezmann?
