Football isn’t, and never has been, an exact science. If it was, we wouldn’t spend so much time arguing about it.
But you can base your opinion about players on statistics.
In this respect Manchester United’s reported target, Thomas Muller, comes out pretty well.
He was the top scorer in World Cup 2010 at just 20 years of age. And he won the thing four years later with a dominant Germany side.
At club level he has won a Champions League and several Bundesliga trophies in his time at Bayern Munchen.
And Sky Sports passes on a report today that Manchester United are still trying to sign the lad. They say:
Manchester United are reportedly still very interested in Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller.
According to Kicker, failed bids to sign the 25-year old have not dented United’s desire and the magazine say the German international could earn as much as €50m over five years at Old Trafford.
Stats aside, he just doesn’t boil our potatoes.
Having Thomas Muller at Manchester United would be akin to having Jose Mourinho as manager.
You know that the results would come, and possibly silverware with it.
But it’s the style of play that might suffer.
Thomas Muller will continue to be a very successful player but not necessarily a spectacular one to watch.
And, if Manchester United are going to spend money on a marquee signing this summer, we would prefer it to be on a player who gets bums off seats with jaw-dropping moments of bewitching magic.
For all his qualities Muller just isn’t that man for our money.
And Pep Guardiola maintains that the player won’t leave the club this summer. He said today:
“Mario (Gotze) stays, Thomas (Muller) stays. Kevin De Bruyne is not coming. I knew that two weeks ago.”
Let’s see some of his best moments.
Manchester United fans: is Muller the best signing that the club can make in the remaining days of the window?
