Big decision

This is a tricky one for any manager.

With the potential options of Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones on the table for Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, he has to decide what he wants most.

At 27 Otamendi is a seasoned international for Argentina with a World Cup Final under his belt. For this reason we feel that Louis may fancy bringing this sort of maturity into a defence which didn’t always look assured last season.

But ESPN reports that Manchester United may be about to have a nibble for Everton’s brilliant youngster Stones. They say:

Manchester United are considering a move to derail Chelsea’s potential purchase of Everton’s John Stones, club sources have said.

Chelsea have already had a £26m bid for the lad knocked back so he isn’t going to come cheap by any means.

But the report again suggests that Jonny Evans would go the other way, which would offset the price by a few million squid at least.

So who would we go for out of Otamendi and Stones?

It’s such a tough one and Otamendi would immediately improve the team.

But we would have to say that the signing of Stones would be more in keeping with Manchester United traditions.

Here is a player who will surely become the caption of club and maybe country in the next 5 or so years.

He’s a wonderful ball playing defender who can give a decade of top football to Manchester United and have the same sort of impact as our favourite defender of all time – Rolls Royce Rio.

We feel that Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal may plump for experience but we’d love to see him invest in the long term with Stones, who can form part of a great nucleus for the club going forward.

Manchester United fans: Stones or Otamendi?
