Now or Never: An Open Letter to Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger

Come on lad

Hi Arsene,

Just a quick note to relay the feelings of many a soccersweep reader.

Like many Arsenal fans, we are are completely aware of the wonderful job that you have done at the club hitherto.

From The Highbury Library to the magnificent Emirates Stadium you have overseen and managed the budget brilliantly while remaining competitive on the pitch in domestic football and reaching The Champions League every year. For this, Arsenal fans are eternally indebted.

But one your directors recently stated that you now have around £200m in the bank to spend on players.

You are apparently loathe to spend crazy money on players at today’s prices. But you must also be aware that a substantial percentage of Arsenal fans believe that the team needs a stronger spine. And your apparent apprehensiveness to go into the market, over recent years, for a world class centre back, anchor man and striker is the subject of eternal consternation some of the Arsenal faithful.

After all this time Arsene, you must at least entertain the idea that some of your transfer methods may be wrong. You may actually need to properly invest in these areas rather than relying on what you have or buying average players from the mid-priced market – particularly where it comes to more defensive players.

After years of austerity you have got to put your foot on the pedal in the transfer market mate.

In reality it’s very hard to buy the quality that you need. But, for around £35m you could buy Nicolas Otamendi, for example – a chiseled and seasoned Argentina international who would provide the perfect nous and brawn alongside the cultured Laurent Koscielny. It appears that you aren’t keen to spend this amount on a defender but that’s what is needed mate.

In midfield you have missed a trick with Morgan Schneiderlin – not for the first time – but there are other great options.

William Carvalho won’t come cheap but look at his quality. At just 23 he is running games from the midfield. He’s a wonderful two touch player with great passing ability and genuine physical presence. Dare we say he even has a bit of the Yaya Toure’s about him? If you don’t move fast he will go to a side like Chelsea, who properly appreciate the worth of such physical strength and class in the engine room.

Up top is always hard to improve. But offer £45m for Karim Benzema and see what happens. Offer £40m for Higuain. Offer £45m for Cavani. Olivier Giroud will always do well against mediocre sides but can come up short in the biggest games. But these three can make a difference in the tightest games against the Chelseas, Barcelonas and Real Madrids of this world.

It’s now or never for many, in relation to their patience with Arsene. You can achieve true greatness if you listen to the fans on this one. They can’t all be wrong. And, despite your obvious brilliance, YOU can’t always be right.

Otamendi, Carvalho, Cavani – Bosh. Done. Dripping in silverware.

Cheers Arsene. Great work in general. The stadium really is the nuts by the way.

This man is very stubborn and reluctant to spend. That’s why he’s always getting stick he needs to get with the times.

Wow! Unbelieveable that so many Arsenal fans have typically gone way over the top because of one defeat. I wonder if you were dancing with joy in May and saying that we will win the league? Remind me when was the last defeat for Arsenal?
Yes, I do agree that we need one or two additions, but this crazy over the top madness does nothing but destabilise our club. Nobody is perfect, nor is any team. There are 37 games to go and I believe that we have a team of very talented footballers who could go on to be very successful this season.

Iceman I agree with you, those who calls Wenger names are deluded and only wants the downfall of our club. In Wenger I am fully behind him no matter what.,.

Well written, short and sharp to the point. Listen, I’m a Wenger dude through and through. He’s done a great job especially keeping us up there during all these years of austerity when we had to sell to survive.
But, come on, everybody (including Wenger himself) says we can now afford to throw some financial muscle around. So why don’t we do it and win something big for the long-suffering fans, please?
If Wenger fails to win, or at least genuinely contend for the PL, I’m afraid he may not have another chance because he, even as stubborn and stoic as he is, would not be able to stand the pressure.
It would be such a pity if someone else came, spent the money and get the glory. Football is a game of results. I’m sure Wenger needs no reminder.

Comment: we can only remain contender in both f.a and capital cup but not in EPL and UEFA champ. arsen Wenger’s philosophy s no more appropriate in today’s football. we need classical players upfront and in defence to partner Laurent koscielny.pls Mr parsimony, by us players.
