When Atletico Madrid beat everyone before them a couple of seasons ago, many of the plaudits went to the towering Brazilian centre-back Miranda.
But we always felt his partner, Diego Godin, was a far more important player in that team.
He did the no-nonsense defending brilliantly but also offered buckets of technique and the sort of vision to spot a great pass and get his team back on the front foot in a split second.
In short, he is a dream player for any manager.
And latest reports suggest that he is on the radar at Manchester City.
The Daily Mail reports today:
Manchester City target Diego Godin transfer and could trigger Atletico Madrid defender’s £28m release clause
With Vincent Kompany’s career being hindered by injury and Eliaquim Mangala yet to convince, there would be little debate about the notion that Godin would improve Manchester City.
The 29 year old has played 92 times for Uruguay, and 210 times for Atletico Madrid, scoring 18 goals.
He’s a superb player and one who would bring the sort of calm assurance to the defence that Company does at his best.
But with the Belgian not certain to return to the imperious form that made him the best centre back in the league a couple of years ago, the quick fire signing of Godin could prove to be a master stroke for City.
Let’s take a look at the lad in action.
Manchester City fans: an expensive luxury or an absolute necessity?

Isco has been an Arsenal target for a number of years . He is a great talent and a very skillful player . His style suits Arsenal like Barcelona , but Arsenal are always very slow in the transfer market as well as reluctant to pay the asked price for the player. It will be very sad if he was signed by another club especially from the premier league.

Isco far more likely to sign for City.
1. Because they are a top club
2. Because of Pellegrini
3. Because Arsenal are at best ordinary. Their fans woeful
4. Because of clueless whinger.
