To lose one superstar in a summer is very disappointing.
To lose two would have to be seen as something of a disaster.
But that may well happen, as Angel di Maria is reportedly set for a medical at PSG and Louis van Gaal has apparently told the Manchester United board to get rid of David de Gea.
That is according to widespread reports this weekend. AS started the fire by stating:
‘Following his bad performance against PSG, Van Gaal prefers to sell him.’
And the boss has aired his frustration publicly by stating of late that:
‘We have a situation that is not favourable for David de Gea but neither for us and the club [Real Madrid] that maybe he wants to go to. Maybe he wants to go to.’
We find the whole situation a bit strange. Of course you would rather have happy players on your books.
But De Gea is a great professional and would surely give his all if he stayed at Manchester Untied this season. We don’t believe for a second that LvG has decided to sell based on one mistake in a friendly match.
The club would not receive a fee for the player if he stayed for another year.
But based on reports Manchester United are about to take a huge hit on Angel di Maria even though he has 4 years left on his contract.
So they clearly aren’t that fussed about a few million here or there. And we think that they will have to spend heavily to replace De Gea anyway, as Sergio Romero is not the man to jump straight into The Premier League as Manchester United’s number 1.
We think that Manchester United should get tough with both – tell them that they owe one more season to the club, after which time their wishes to leave will be granted.
But it seems that both could now depart, which will leave Manchester United with gaping holes in their squad.
