Sergio Romero or no Sergio Romero, Manchester United fans will all be desperate for David de Gea to stay at Old Trafford this season.

Because, at just 24, he’s already comfortably one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

And there is some really positive news on that front today as The Daily Mail reports that De Gea will stay at Manchester United if Sergio Ramos signs a new deal at Real Madrid, as seems increasingly likely. They say:

Manchester United will not cash in on David de Gea should Sergio Ramos sign a new contract with Real Madrid.

They remain convinced that keeping the talented De Gea for another season far outweighs the short-term gain of taking a reduced fee of around £15m for him and point to his role in ensuring the club qualified for a Champions League play-off as evidence to justify that stance.

We always knew that Ramos would stay at Real Madrid didn’t we?

Marca reports today:

Ramos and Pérez smoke the pipe of peace

The basic details of the captain’s new and improved contract with Real Madrid seem to be sorted and an agreement much nearer to being signed.

But, by tieing the deals together Manchester United have safeguarded themselves against outright defeat on this one.

Manchester United could possibly get around £20 million for the player if they cashed in now.

But De Gea was superb last year and could really be the difference between success and failure in The Premier league and Europe this season. £20m pounds is a drop in the ocean of the potential revenue that the club could receive from going all the way in the big competitions.

Another angle to this, as we have stated before, is that another year at Manchester United may change the player’s mind as to where his future lies. If United win The Champions League next season perhaps the Spanish superstar will be inclined to stay and sign a new contract.
