Let’s not pretend that Tottenham are the sort of small club that has to bow to the every desire of the elite. They have done deals in the past for players that they didn’t want to lose – Berbatov and Bale immediately come to mind. But they have a really strong team, big tradition and good financial grounding.

That said, they aren’t in The Champions League. They are on the cusp every season but, until they reach the top four on a regular basis, their players are going to be targeted each summer.

Of course, what Tottenham need to do, in order to reach the holy grail, is to hold on to their best players.

But with the top four looking ever more difficult to reach, some heads do get turned. And, it will only take a hint of temptation for Manchester United to move on these two this summer:

Hugo Lloris

Last month Lloris speculated about his future when he said:

“For any player you need to play at the highest level to improve yourself to help your national team to improve. I think every player wants to play in the Champions League because it is the highest level. We work for that and I hope to play Champions League football again.

At the moment, De Gea is still Manchester United keeper so I have no need to talk about that.”

The David de Gea situation isn’t straight forward and it looks as if he is becoming ever more central to the tussle for Sergio Ramos. But we still expect him to leave this summer and Manchester United will surely go for LLoris or Begovic. The latter is the cheaper option but Lloris is a superstar. Recent reports suggest that Tottenham would demand £30m for the lad.

Harry Kane

Speaking to a couple of Manchester United folk at the weekend there is a sense that a move for Kane would be viewed as something of a gamble. At 21 the lad has only had one successful year in top level football – but what a year – 31 goals in 51 appearances.

And you only have to look at the way he hits the ball to know that this lad will score goals throughout his career. We haven’t seen a sweeter English striker of the ball since Shearer. Kane always seems to find time and space so naturally. And he doesn’t go missing against the big boys – as Chelsea will attest.

Manchester United will have a monumental battle on their hands to get this lad but he would be worth it. The Sun suggested this weekend that Manchester United are making a move for the lad and will have to part with £40m to land the star.

So a tidy cheque for £70m just might be changing hands between Manchester United and Spurs before too long.
