Manchester United bid confirmed as ex-Red says it’s virtually ‘a done deal’

SIGN THIS MAN

Slow

This story has some good and some bad.

Manchester United desperately need a new central midfielder who can sit in front of the defence, stop attacks and spray the ball around like Michael Carrick in his prime.

We have long maintained that Morgan Schneiderlin is the best man for the job.

And Ronald Koeman has confirmed that a bid has been made by Manchester United for the Frenchman. He is quoted a saying Monday:

‘Two weeks ago we had a bid from Manchester United and it wasn’t enough,’ said Koeman.

‘There have been no more bids.

‘I had a meeting with Morgan. We will see what happens in the next few days. Numbers aren’t my business, it’s the club’s.’

That’s the good part. Manchester United are definitely interested.

But the fact that they haven’t come back with a second bid in the space of a fortnight is concerning. It could be that they have set their sights set on another player. But they may also have decided that the Frenchman isn’t worth the fee being quoted and may not move to Manchester United after all.

It’s somewhat symptomatic of United’s summer in the market – lots of hype but very little action so far.

They have of course done a superb deal for Memphis Depay. But with The Champions League qualifying rounds drawing ever nearer and United still without reinforcements in the midfield, it is leaving the fans increasingly twitchy. Because, when Michael Carrick was injured last season, United were worryingly easy to play through.

In some potentially positive news, Mark Bosnich has been quoted as saying:

“Morgan Schneiderlin is pretty much a done deal, that will go ahead from what I’ve heard.”

Manchester United fans: can the club cope if they don’t succeed in signing a midfielder to add to the ranks this summer?
