As we all know, despite the huge amount of wheeling and dealing that has already gone on between clubs this summer, the window doesn’t officially open until July 1st.
Of course, much planning has gone in up to this stage and the July threshold is simply a time when deals can be made official.
So, with Manchester United linked to every man and their dog, how likely are they to announce the completion of a transfer on July 1st (Wednesday)?
Well, for our money, there is a good chance of a deal being announced for Morgan Schneiderlin. He seems the closest to arriving this week and he’d be a fantastic signing.
The Daily Mail reported over the weekend that the deal is close:
Morgan Schneiderlin poised to seal £25m Manchester United switch as Arsenal pull out of running for Southampton midfielder
And bookmakers SkyBet have now suspended betting on the lad joining Manchester United in this window.
Sky Bet have suspended betting on him joining the Old Trafford outfit.
We are rather surprised that some areas of the media have suggested that Manchester United are waiting to see what happens with Bastian Schweinsteiger before they confirm the Schneiderlin deal.
But the German has hinted that he will stay at Bayern by saying:
“We’ve won the Bundesliga for three consecutive times, no team ever has managed to win it four times,” he said. “That’s a motivation.”
In his pomp Schweinsteiger was a world class player. And he’s certainly not on the scrap heap yet. But a deal for the Frenchman makes so much more sense.
He’s a better player right now and still hasn’t reached his prime age. At 25 he can have a similar impact at Manchester United as Michael Carrick has over the last 8 years.
Conversely the signing of the German would demonstrate a worrying short-termist approach to the team. Manchester United fans want to see the creation of a dynasty in the same way that Barcelona put a young nucleus together, in the middle of the last decade, which brought them long-term, unprecedented success.
Manchester United should pull their fingers out on this one because the Frenchman ticks all the boxes and would immediately make United a much harder team to break down.
