Man U

PICTURE: Manchester United XIs with Ramos and Schweinsteiger

Not that good

Firstly, for the record, we think that these would be extremely lazy signings for Manchester United. The club pays a fortune to its scouting network, in order to turn up the stars of the future around the world.

But to pull two veterans out of the hat – albeit talented lads – feels as if Manchester United have suddenly been bought by uber-wealthy oil barons who want immediate success and don’t care about the longer term of the club.

No sell on fees, huge wages and players who could arguably lack hunger, having won everything in the game already.

Now that spleen has been well and truly vented let’s see how Schweinsteiger and Ramos would fit into the team.

Schweinsteiger is a box to box midfielder who has become a little more conservative in his approach as he’s got toward 30. He wouldn’t add a lot of dynamism to the team but he would hold and pass the ball well, in much the same way as Michael Carrick.

They could play together in a 4-2-3-1 like so:

Or a 4-3-3:

Or Carrick might be kept in reserve:

As for Ramos, he would play at centre back apart from in emergency when he may be called on to play as anchor man.

While they are both quality footballers we wonder how excited the Manchester United fans would be to see two players who are past their peak potentially joining the club.

Manchester United fans: would it be wiser to invest in longer-term signings?
