The appointment of Steve McClaren as Newcastle boss has been met with differing opinions by the Toon faithful. But, whatever your thoughts on the subject, he will at least bring with him the contacts of a man who has worked in different European leagues. He must be able to improve the playing staff at Newcastle this summer and latest reports suggest that he will start with the defence.
The Daily Mail says that Newcastle are after a spritely centre back:
Newcastle are continuing to make enquiries about Schalke defender Joel Matip.
The price would apparently be somewhere in the region of £10m for a player who was born in Germany but has played 28 times for Cameroon due to his father.
He’s also been picked when fit for Schalke over the last 6 years in which he has played over 200 times since 2009.
He looks like a capable defender and one with good feet. At a towering 6ft 4in he shouldn’t have too many problems settling into the physical side of The Premier League and will certainly be able to offer power in the aerial duels and from set pieces.
Let’s take a brief look at the lad in a action, scoring a goal for his club with a brave header. Newcastle fans: can you build a solid foundation from the back by signing Matip this summer?
