Over the last few years, we have periodically tempted the wrath of Real Madrid fans by questioning the quality at the heart of the defence. Both Sergio Ramos and Pepe have been part of a fairly successful team but we wonder whether they would be found out if they were playing for a side which relied more heavily on a solid back line.
At 32 the warrior known as Pepe looks particularly vulnerable to the axe next season as Raphael Varane blossoms into a top player. We think that this lad is going to become a world class talent.
But reports today suggest that Real Madrid may attempt to muscle in on Manchester United for the signature of another strong defender. The Telegraph says:
Nicolas Otamendi, the Valencia defender, may now turn down Manchester United in favour of a move to Real Madrid
Otamendi is a pretty decent all rounder. He’s quick, strong and technically proficient. He hasn’t been a nailed on starter for Argentina since his debut in 2009. He has 21 caps in total for his country but he was dropped from the team for Brazil 2014 before being reinstated for the first match of the Copa America.
Recent reports suggest that his fee could be as much as £25m. If a bidding war ensues it could go even higher.
Let’s take a look at the lad in action. Real Madrid fans: is Otamendi noticeably better than what you already have?
