Missed opportunity

Manchester United’s list of reported targets seems to grow by the day but we can at least cross two potential signings off the list today after deals were agreed at other clubs.

The BBC reports:

Sami Khedira will join Juventus on a free transfer from Real Madrid on 1 July, the Italian club have announced.

Juventus have done some superb business in the transfer market over the last few years and we wonder whether they have got another absolute bargain with the German international. At 28 he’s got many miles left in the tank and was imperious at The World Cup in Brazil 2014 even though he had just returned from a long-term injury.

Manchester United may live to regret passing up the potential opportunity to take the lad on a free.

Meanwhile Dani Alves has also done major U-turn and signed a deal to stay at Barcelona for another two years. The 32 year old was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, among others, and has surprised many by putting pen to paper on a new deal at Barca. This will lead the more cynical to believe that Alves was simply using Manchester United’s interest as leverage for a new deal at The Nou Camp.

Either way, despite a fantastic performance in The Champions League final in Berlin last weekend, we never felt that this was the right deal for Manchester United. Many of the fans would prefer to see a more long-term signing. Even if this means that the player isn’t immediately at or near the level of Alves, he can grow into the team and improve over time. This is why we feel that Nathaniel Clyne would be far better purchase for Manchester United hit summer.

Manchester United fans: would you have taken either player given the chance?
