Roberto Martinez’s roller coaster ride as Everton head coach is a classic representation of how quickly stock can rise and fall in the management game.
After his first season in charge he was essentially GOD. And with a good summer in the market most expected Everton to kick on and really challenge for top 5 last season.
But Everton’s form was patchy and questions were asked of Martinez. He’s still a very popular figure at Goodison and one of the reasons for that is his apparent attention to detail. He seems so meticulous about everything he does.
And he has clearly been gearing himself up for a big summer in the market for months. In encouraging news for Everton fans Martinez says that he wants to improve every area of the squad this summer:
‘You are looking in every line of the team, Martinez told EvertonTV. ‘In goal we are strong. Joel Robles showed this season that he is a keeper with a lot of potential and we are privileged to have Tim Howard.
‘So it is about adding a player per line and making sure they are specific profiles and suit what the team requires.
‘That makes sure the work that we have over the last six or seven months since December and January is paying off now in this window and we are in a position to make bringing in those players a reality.’
We think that football is ever more focused on having a front three or four that can devastate the opponent. Everton certainly need to add numbers in this area, for our money, but we can see them having a strong campaign, if they can hold onto the likes of Barkley and Stones.
