Everton to complete another transfer this week

Everton fans may be pleased to hear that highly placed sources reckon that a deal to bring Tom Cleverley to the club is set to be completed this week.

Cleverley nearly joined Everton in the winter window but a deal stalled due to financial differences and he went to Aston Villa instead.

But Everton boss Roberto Martinez has clearly kept track of the lad and his desire to work with him remains undiminished. The Times states:

Tom Cleverley will join Everton on a free transfer from Manchester United this week. The England midfielder is expected to sign a five-year contract, worth about £50,000 a week, with Everton hopeful of concluding a deal in the next 72 hours.

We do think that Cleverley is the sort of player that would suit the style of Martinez at Everton. He’s neat and tidy and has decent technique – a ball playing footballer.

But we just wonder whether the lad is creative enough to force his way into the side on a permanent basis. He generally keeps the ball well but we don’t see enough forward thrust or creative passing from the lad who seems happy to keep things safe.

Perhaps the Everton manager can bring the best out of a lad who was an England regular a couple of seasons ago. But we would be interested to hear from Everton fans on this.

Is Cleverley an exciting addition or an underwhelming signing for Everton?

Cleverley played the 2010/11 season at Wigan under Martinez, so Martinez has a good idea what he is getting.

However, Cleverley suffered ligament injury the next season following a heavy tackle in the third minute of the game at Bolton. Kevin Davies liked to make an early impression in a game.

After seeing Cleverley in the Cup Final, I am convinced he is not good enough. Martinez might have seen enough at Wigan to think he is suitable but then he saw enough of Alcaraz and look how he turned out.
