Transfers: Real Madrid’s new galactico?

Sterling: Flyer

Real Madrid aren’t exactly in ill health but you do feel that, after a season that promised so much and ultimately delivered so little, they will make several big changes in personnel this summer.

The thing about Real Madrid is that they have so many huge stars that they can’t really sign a new one without selling another. Players like Bale, Benzema and Ronaldo would simply refuse to sit on the bench for any length of time. So when we talk about big creative signings then we must also talk about big creative departures.

British media outlet The Guardian reports that Real Madrid are keen on 20 year old flyer Raheem Sterling this summer. The player has been involved in something of a storm at his club where he is yet to agree a new contract. This has caused a backlash with the fans and there is an increasing sense that the player will move this summer.

He has no shortage of suitors in England and Real Madrid have now been linked. He’s got wonderful potential. He’s ridiculously quick and loves cutting into the very heart of opposition sides with his dribbling. But he hasn’t played particularly well for some time and the idea of him displacing Bale, Ronaldo or Rodriguez in the Real side is hard to imagine.

Of course there has been much talk of a Bale departure this summer and that would free up a natural berth for Sterling. But Real Madrid would be swapping a fully fledged star with a young lad.

FINAL WORD: Sterling has shown great promise in the past but he isn’t the finished article and Real Madrid would probably have to go backwards before they progressed as a team if they brought Sterling in. No deal.
