Chelsea have long been linked with a move for Raphael Varane of Real Madrid. Jose Mourinho is clearly and admirer and its easy to see why. The Frenchman is one of the fastest defenders around but he also has the sort of composure on the ball that made Rio Ferdinand a household name.

We always assert that there is seldom smoke without fire in the transfer market. But Varane is getting an increasing amount of game time in the Real side and it’s difficult to see them letting him go at this point of his promising career.

Latest reports suggest that Chelsea will turn their attention to the brilliant John Stones if the Varane deal is a no go.

And The London Evening Standard reports:

Chelsea are continuing to monitor Everton defender John Stones in case they can’t lure Raphael Varane to Stamford Bridge.

Stones - Future Chelsea captain?

Stones – Future Chelsea captain?

Stones has returned to the fold with honours after a bad injury sidelined him for a large chunk of the season. He has the composure of a player closer to 30 than 20 and reads the game very well. When you add his great technique to the list of virtues, then it’s easy to imagine that Chelsea would be interested in him as a long term replacement for John Terry.

So it seems that Everton will be in for another annoying summer of speculation surrounding their stars. But, with new found financial stability and a great nucleus of players, they will be in no mood to play ball with Chelsea this summer.

Let’s see the lad in a action. Chelsea fans: keen?
