Arsenal: Legend in minor controversy

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry was worth the entrance fee alone and is usually as cool off the pitch as he was sublime on it. But his latest comments seem a bit odd.

In response to Chicharito’s decisive, last gasp goal against Atletico Madrid in The Champions League quarter final on Wednesday evening the former Arsenal man had a dig at the loveable Mexican, saying he celebrated:

“like he won the World Cup”

We are all for the underdog and would have loved to see Atletico win this match. Perhaps it’s just sour grapes on the part of a guy who used to play for Barcelona.

But scoring a winner in The Champions League quarter final is surely cause for celebration, even if you are bagging a goal a game as Henry regularly did at Arsenal.

But for Chicharito, this goal was extra special. He has scarcely been getting look in at Real this season. The stats say that he has played 25 times and scored 6 goals for his club. But most of those appearances have been as a substitute in the dieing embers of games.

He got a start in La Liga last weekend and was then thrust into the spotlight for the quarter final. With two minutes to go, and having had a quiet game, he must have been getting the feeling that his number was up.

But he bags the winner and 9 months of frustration is exchanged for relief. If you can’t get excited about that then you probably need to get yourself down the doctors for some superstrength happy pills.

We are certain that Thierry will be asked to revisit his statement in the coming days. He’s usually such an insightful pundit.
