Big summer signing?

The default emotion for Newcastle fans, under the tenure of Mike Ashley, seems to be that of outrage.

The latest outrage has been generated by the news that Newcastle have so much spare cash under the mattress, despite needing serious squad reinforcement.

Perhaps in an attempt to assuage the anger of the Newcastle faithful, this story has been published since:

Newcastle plot Charlie Austin transfer from QPR to convince Steve McClaren to be their manager

Mike Ashley wants £10million-rated Charlie Austin to kick-off a summer spending spree designed to lure Steve McClaren to Newcastle.

Toon owner Ashley is ready to bankroll a busy transfer window with Queens Park Rangers hot-shot Austin lined up to be the latest in a long tradition of famous No9s including the likes of Alan Shearer.

The problem for many a Toon fan is that we have heard this all before haven’t we? Stories of big investment in players ‘tomorrow’ or ‘this summer’. When will we actually see the money change hands?

As far as Austin goes, he has had a brilliant season for QPR and the one thing that you can say with great confidence is that he knows where the net is. Just like Harry Kane at Tottenham, Austin is so efficient with the ball. He may not score with every shooting chance but he usually forces the goalkeeper into a save by hitting the target. He’s got 17 in just 30 games for a seriously struggling side this season and, at 25, he has his best years aead of him.

Our main concern is his lack of pace. It’s such an important part of modern football and we would be inclined to make our main summer investment at Newcastle one with more groundspeed. But Shearer wasn’t exactly lighting quick was he?

Let’s see Austin in action. Newcastle fans: any truth in the rumour?

The goals alone won’t be enough, they will need to buy the nets too.
