To say that Arsenal definitely need a new keeper may be a little unfair on David Ospina who, at 26 and just a few months into his Arsenal career, deserves more time to prove himself. But Wojciech Szczęsny is perhaps not the man to bring trophies back to Arsenal on a regular basis.
And, as the window comes to a close, it’s open season on crazy rumours. The Evening Standard forwards a rumour that Arsenal may go for another Sol Campbellesque swoop in the coming months, in a story that may put Spurs fans off a French news outlet for life:
According to French publication L’Equipe, Arsenal will launch an audacious bid to bring Tottenham star Hugo Lloris to the Emirates.
Would he be the answer? Absolutely. Without any doubt at all. Lloris is comfortably one of the best keepers in Europe right now. He has the odd wobble but makes up for it by prowling his area with all the intent and menace of a large, hangry dog whose bone has just been nicked. More than that, he is an artist with wonderful hand-eye coordination and lovely feet. He has arguably coined the term ‘sweeper-keeper’.
With him between the sticks Arsenal would be much closer to yearly silverware. But will it happen? No it will not. For all Wenger’s arguable foibles as a manager he is a good man and he probably wouldn’t want to get involved in the poaching of a star player from an arch rival at this stage of his long and illustrious career.
Lloris would make Arsenal a better side but there are other options out there who would be far less difficult to sign.
Let’s enjoy his bette moments nonetheless.
