The Telegraph reports today that Arsenal are, at last, ready to prioritise the signing of a top defensive midfielder.
Arsene Wenger wants Morgan Schneiderlin in the summer but could turn to Cheick Tiote in January
Of the two, we would argue that Schneiderlin is technically better but Tiote has greater levels of energy. We would probably take the former, given the choice. Recently he has been imperious for Southampton. But the addition of Tiote in January could prove the difference between Champions and Europa League next season – and having these two at the club would make it immeasurably stronger.
Quite why it has taken this long for the boss to see what the fans have seen for years is totally beyond us. We are sure that Arsene Wenger will formulate a clever response to questions about why this area of the side has taken so long to deal with. But many believe Wenger’s refusal to buy a quality anchor man is down to simple stubbornness.
What is almost certain is that, if Arsenal get the right guy, trophies will soon follow. With the creativity in the side going forward, and the impending addition of Gabriel Paulista, Arsenal will be a tougher proposition altogether.
Now we just have to persuade Wenger that he needs a top goalkeeper and another quality finisher. That may take another 5 years but at least he is slowly going in the right direction.
What we can say with confidence is that football remains a simple game which is regularly over-complicated. Take from that what you will.
