Manchester United’s return to the top is ‘an absolute inevitability’ according to Sports Writer of the Year

Inevitable?

We have always been big fans of big Martin Samuel. The British Sports Writer of the Year for 2014 has that rare combination of lyrical wizardry and genuine football insight. He’s a football fanatic who writes a compelling bit of content and has the everyman demeanour that people trust.

And, in a similar vein to recent soccersweep scribblings, he has now written about how there is only one club in England who can afford Lionel Messi. There has been intense speculation over the last few days that the best player to ever walk the planet could move to Chelsea as he has become disillusioned with life at Barcelona.

But, with FIFA Fairplay legislation having a big impact in practice, the only feasible English destination for Messi could be Manchester United.

In his latest piece for The Daily Mail, the big man writes:

Chelsea can’t splash out on Lionel Messi… only Manchester United can make the numbers add up

Because of the new FIFA rules Samuel is of the opinion that it’s simply a matter of time before Manchester United are back at the top of the pile – domestically at least.

The funny thing is, some folk still wonder if Manchester United will get back to the top. It’s when. Not if. It is an absolute inevitability. And not long-term, either. Next season, maybe. If not, the year after.

We are almost in complete accordance. We do think that Fairplay has given Manchester United – a club with revenue which dwarfs the rest in England – a massive leg up at a time when they were in danger of being left for dead.

But they still need to be managed correctly. Success is not a given unless they have a top man at the helm. Fortunately it appears that Manchester United have that man in Louis van Gaal. And perhaps it’s not so outlandish to think that Mr. Messi might one day wear the famous red shirt of Manchester United on a regular basis.
