With about half of the January transfer window now gone we are getting to the business end of the market – the period in which the managers must stop assessing and make a decision about who, if anyone, they will actually sign.
Ideally business is done in the summer when new players can get a whole pre-season under their belt in order to assimilate into the squad. But you get the sense that Liverpool need to make a big purchase now to boost morale and give them a realistic chance of making a push for the top four. Because, with Southampton returning to their bouyant selves of late and Manchester United and Arsenal there or thereabouts, Liverpool have a massive job on their hands to get back in The Champions League next season – via The Premier League anyway.
The Express reports that Liverpool could get just the shot in the arm that they need:
Ezequiel Lavezzi set for £8m Liverpool switch as PSG eye Man Utd target Nicolas Gaitan
The Argentine international – of some 37 caps – has done the business pretty much everywhere that he has played.
In his early career he was a quite prolific goal scorer. But while that scoring rate has tailed off a little, there is so much more to his game. This is a wonderful playmaker who can unlock the tightest of defences while still offering his own goal threat.
At 29 he could offer the composure and cutting edge that Liverpool have arguably been lacking up top this season. Liverpool have plenty of pace. They need a target towards the top end of the park who the ball sticks to and who makes things happen for others.
Let’s see him in action. Liverpool fans: does Lavezzi tickle your fancy?

I’m so tired of repeatedly getting my hopes up during transfer windows reading all the rumour mills from all over to find out that Liverpool has yet failed again in chasing a big name target. “Branded” names don’t want to come and the fact that we’re always shopping in bargain basements is becoming depressing cliche.
