Some considerable time before the football world was waxing lyrical about the creative talents of Marco Reus and Toni Kroos, much of the hype was about Germany international Ilkay Gundogan.
We often wonder how good he would be if he hadn’t been deprived of 18 months of football through serious injury. Because, before he got crocked, he looked like one of the most complete midfielders in the game.
He’s taken a long time to recover but, still only 24, he probably has his best years ahead of him. And The Independent reports that Arsenal are the club to make a move for a player who has been linked to many a top side.
The Gunners have also held a long-term interest in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan. It was reported earlier this month that Arsene Wenger has seen to it that Arsenal have made contact with their German counterparts over a possible deal. Reports today now suggest that’s been followed up with a bid of £15.6m. The report adds that the two clubs will meet in the coming days to discuss it further.
You may be concerned that despite his talent, he isn’t the natural anchor man that Arsenal need. It’s true that he is a really good quality creator and could easily play at number 10. But adaptability is his key strength and he is equally good at marshalling the defence. In essence he’s a box to box man who can do the lot.
If fit, he’d be a marvellous signing for the club and represent a major step forward in the hunt for regular trophies.
Let’s take a look at the lad in action. Arsenal fans: does Gundogan tickle your fancy?
