We at soccersweep regularly state that there is seldom smoke without fire in the transfer market. When a player is persistently linked with a move there is usually some substance to it – whether or not a deal is actually finalised.
And this theory is about to be tested to the limit with the superb centre back Raphael Varane. We think that Real Madrid would be crazy to let the 21 year old go. He’s next in line to the central defensive throne at the club and, for our money, he is easily good enough to step into the boots of Pepe or Sergio Ramos right now.
Yet the player is being linked on a daily basis to a move to Chelsea or Manchester United. Having worked with him at Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho knows just how good a deal Chelsea would be getting if they snared him – Varane is lightning fast, solid and has a wonderful first touch.

Manchester United have missed Rio Ferdinand badly and, looking around Europe, there are few players quite as similar to the England legend as Varane.
It’s a tough one for Real Madrid because they will want to keep the player happy rather than lose him. We would drop Pepe or move Ramos back to right back in order to avoid losing the sublime Frenchman.
