We have long held the opinion that Manchester United should be trying to sign world-class players, but those in the right age bracket, in the coming months.
Louis van Gaal is doing a fantastic job at Manchester United but the legacy that he leaves will also dictate to his overall success.
He does seem, to us, to be the type of coach who wants to build something for the long term rather than a quick fix – even if he does only stay at the club for three years as expected.
However, rumours persist that Manchester United will attempt to sign Arjen Robben in the coming window. He turns 31 in January but is currently one of the best players in the world.
While Robben could certainly do a fantastic job for Manchester United in the short term, serious questions would surely be asked about such a massive outlay on a player who is only going to go one way.
Nevertheless, practicality aside, you couldn’t fail to get excited about such a signing.

There is no doubting his class and suitability to Manchester United. But we feel that the time to sign him was when he left PSV or Real Madrid. Now Manchester United should be investing their money more sensibly.
