The loss of Luka Modric and continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of Sami Khedira means that Real Madrid are perhaps less well equipped in the engine room than we may think.

Real Madrid have other options but one player who has long been linked to move to the club has confirmed that Los Blancos made a bid for his services before he got injured.

“Real Madrid made an offer for me but my club refused it,”

That man is Ilkay Gundogan of Borussia Dortmund. After a blinding season in 2012/13 he sustained an injury which would limit him to only 3 appearances for the German giants last term. Now he’s finally fit and itching to show what he can do again.

“Playing outside Germany is one of my big goals. If one day I leave here, I’d like to play in Spain or for one of the big teams in England.”

We think that, at his best, he is easily good enough for the Real Madrid midfield – if not to displace Kroos and Modric straight away, then to at least offer able assistance.

Gundogan is a blur of positive motion. He covers the ground almost effortlessly and keeps things ticking in the midfield. He’s also got great technique and offers real threat going forward to. At 24 he’s a gem of a player who could be about to take Europe by storm.

Let’s take a look at him in action. Real Madrid fans: good enough for the squad or would you keep Khedira?
