With the injury list plaguing Manchester United right now they are sure to consider the fitness record of any new acquisition with particular scrutiny.
So the idea of a move for Ilkay Gundogan may seem bonkers. The brilliant German has had an injury nightmare for the last 18 months and is just beginning to find his feet again with Borussia Dortmund after just 3 appearances in the whole of the last campaign.
But, at just 24, you would have to back him to recover fully from his injuries. If he can rediscover the form of 2 years ago then everyone will want the lad. Before the injury Gundogan was flying at club level and hit two goals in 8 appearances for Germany.
Gundogan was an integral member of the Dortmund side that took the German league and Europe by storm two seasons ago. They have missed his industry and the fantastic momentum that he generates in the midfield.
The player himself has now suggested that he wants a move to England at some stage in his career.Gundogan said:
“Playing outside Germany is one of my big goals. If one day I leave here, I’d like to play in Spain or for one of the big teams in England.”
Let’s remind ourselves of the brilliance of Gundogan at his flying best. Manchester United fans: is he the perfect midfield solution?
