Everton have been widely linked with Ipswich left-back Tyrone Mings over the last day or so. While bank busting winter deals would always be welcomed, it’s not traditionally a time for wholesale changes at Everton. So perhaps this sort of deal represents the most likely business for January.
What do we know about him? Well, he’s 21 and forced his way in the Ipswich side last season playing 18 times. On deadline day 2014 he was the sub jest of a £3m bid from Crystal Palace, which was rejected. And Arsenal and Chelsea, no less, are said to have shown interest int he past.
This is a highly mobile and progressive young footballer who’s solid in the tackle but also loves to get up the park.
With Brian Oviedo now back form injury you would imagine that Everton are pretty well covered down the left flank. But, in another portent of Roberto Martinez’s healthy handling of the club the Everton boss is trying to safeguard the future of the club rather than just looking at things shirt term in order to improve his own reputation. We have come to expect nothing less from the man of course.
But Martinez obviously loves his fullbacks to get forward and offer genuine attacking threat. Mings looks very much like the sort of player who us happy to do this. So you would have to say that, at maybe £4-5m he would be worth the punt.
Let’s see the lad scoring for Ipswich. Everton fans: worth a punt?
