Everton’s best XI with everyone fit

Good side

It’s sometimes seen as the impossible scenario – with a squad of 25 highly active athletes the idea of having them all fit at once may be a pipe dream. And that’s one of the major reasons, of course, why squads are so big these days.

But the fact remains that, with everyone fit, Everton would have a seriously good side. One that we feel could match, and even beat, any team in The Premier League on their day.

Starting from the back. Everton need to replace Tim Howard sooner rather than later. He’s been a titan between the sticks but at 35 we feel that his influence is waning. The other keepers in the squad – Robles and Stanek – have an awful to prove to become No.1’s of the quality of the American. But, for now, Howard is still more than decent.

Everton’s first choice full backs are the envy of The Premier League and the adaptable left-sided understudy Brian Oviedo is also a brilliant player.

When fit we would put John Stones in the team as a first choice now. He has the mobility that Sylvain Distin, at 36, does not.

Everton’s midfield has very good quality. The 4-2-3-1 formation sees Barry and McCarthy work brilliantly as a defensive shield and springboard for accurately crafted attacks. We have been mightily impressed by Besic and he’s knocking on the door for Barry’s position already. But the Englishman gets the nod for now, purely on the basis of his experience and passing ability.

Aiden McGeady has been a welcome addition who brings more pace and precision to the flanks. Ross Barkley is the star of the team behind the striker and Mirallas is a thorn in the side on the other wing.

Up top it has to be Romelu Lukaku.

So here’s our mouth-watering best Everton XI. Let’s just hope that we will see them all on the pitch in tandem before too long.
