Arsenal to pay €43.2m for seriously sensible signing – report

Arsene-Wenger

Titan Alert

Arsenal seem to be linked to attacking midfielders on a daily basis. Despite having a catalogue of top creators they are never far away from the playmaker rumour mills.

But we all know that what Arsenal really need is a stronger spine. Sign up Petr Cech for starters. Then buy another central defender and midfield general. Add another striker and bob’s your uncle.

In terms of the defence Koscielny and Mertesacker have developed a good understanding. But the latter is only going to get slower and Arsenal need to plan long-term. Calum Chambers is proving to be a top signing but Arsenal have been linked, of late, with a player who can command the defence for a decade.

The Express reports boldly:

ARSENAL have reignited their interest in Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte, and will meet his £34million (43.2m Euros) buyout clause ahead of the January transfer window.

It’s a huge amount of money for a 20 year old. But some players seem to carry a guarantee of future greatness and this is most certainly one of them. The Athletic Bilbao stopper has been linked with a move to virtually every big club in Europe and, sadly for the Bilbao fans, the Frenchman seems destined for a move at some stage. Athletic can at least expect a massive fee for the lad.

While we think Arsenal would be wise to snap him up, our reservation is that Arsene Wenger generally seems less willing to spend top dollar on defenders than his does attackers – more specifically, attacking midfielders.

Anyhoo, let’s take a look at the lad in action. Arsenal fans: can you see Arsene splurging this sort of cash on a young defender?
