Everton have had a strange start to the season. Their stats tell a confusing story. Joint second highest scorers in the league but they have also conceded more than any other team. Impressive results against Liverpool, Wolfsburg and West Brom but 15th in the league and only one league win in six.
But we do feel that this is an Everton side that is still progressing. They look to have a stronger squad than at any time over the last 5 years and will almost certainly climb the table before long. But more investment will surely ensue this winter if the right players become available to the canny Roberto Martinez.
The Guardian reports Tuesday that the Everton manager has his eye on a young Italian striker:
Everton are among several clubs who like the look of Sampdoria’s 22-year-old striker Manolo Gabbiadini.
He’s been moved around quite a lot in his fledgling career and has already played for 5 clubs at senior level. His future is further muddied by the sort of complicated joint ownership that has infiltrated the game over the last few years.
But he is a player of quality and has already turned out for the senior Italian national side after scoring 12 in 24 for the U21s between 2010-2013.
He’s a big lad at 6ft 1in and doesn’t look as if the physical side of the game in England would bother him too much.
