Arsenal: The most ludicrous transfer rumour of all time? Or another Van Persie…

Madness

With just over 10 days to go until the end of the transfer window we have well and truly hit silly season now.

This is of course the time of year when the crazy rumours start to fly. And one today has made us chuckle. It comes from The Metro who reckon:

Arsenal are set to offer Paris Saint Germain £32million plus Olivier Giroud for their striker Edinson Cavani, according to reports in France.

We aren’t saying that Giroud is better than Cavani – far from it. The Uruguayan is tailor made for The Premier League and would surely have a bigger impact up top.

But Arsenal are blatantly short of top-quality strikers so to get rid of their best one seems absolutely ludicrous. He may have taken some criticism of late but he’s still a heavy weight name and one who is necessary for the squad.

He scored 22 goals last season and is at the peak of his career.

If you gave us the option to do this deal we would take it. Cavani is world-class. But we just can’t see Wenger forgoing his front line striker as part of the deal.

We could be wrong. We got it wrong with Van Persie when we almost wet ourselves at the suggestion that he was going to Man United. But, however good Cavani is, we think it would be a massive gamble to let your tried and tested number 9 leave at this point of the season.

But with both, Arsenal would have to be considered very serious title contenders.

Let’s see Cavani in action. Arsenal fans, would you swap Giroud for Cavani?

    Well said.
Giroud’s lack of pace is not covered by the aerial presence in front of goals that he was supposed to bring. In fact he is totally useless against the top teams. Furthermore he stretches our midfield which results in a lack of density in our defensive play and we pay dealy on counterattacks.
I think if we keep him, we will tire the team unnecessarily and collapse in Feb, March as usual.
