Manchester United are reportedly looking to beat their rivals to the signing of World Cup winner Mats Hummels. The Red Devils are currently preparing a huge bid of £29 million as they look to tempt an adamant Borussia Dortmund to sell one of their star performers.
The Express reports that German newspaper Bild has information suggesting Louis van Gaal is desperate to bring the centre back to Old Trafford and are willing to spend big to land the player.
German side Borussia Dortmund remain confident that they will keep Hummels though and are not willing to allow him to leave. But with other clubs such as Arsenal also interested in bringing the defender to The Premier League, a bidding war could break out and push the fee high enough to persuade Jurgen Klopp to sell.
Manchester United are known to be in the hunt for a centre back. Louis van Gaal has used a 3-5-2 formation in pre-season and he would like additional central defenders at the club to ensure he has enough options at the back.
Manchester United were recently beaten to the signing of Thomas Vermaelen from Barcelona, meaning that they will now have to look at other, potentially more expensive, options.
Hummels rose to prominence over the last few years thanks to his hugely impressive performances for Borussia Dortmund. He began his career at Bayern Munich but failed to break into the first team and was sold in 2009.
He has become an integral member of the German outfit, making 220 appearances in all competitions and helping them win two Bundesliga titles and a DFL-Supercup in 2013. He has also been made captain of the side, further highlighting his positive role in the squad.
The 25-year-old centre was also part of the German national team that won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, playing a major role in getting the team to the World Cup Final.
