With Reus looking increasingly likely to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer, having rejected a new contract from the club, it now appears that Arsenal have jumped ahead of their rivals in the charge to sign him.

According to The Metro, Arsene Wenger has made the player a top target and is working to bring the player in as soon as possible. This may mean the club has to wait until next year though, with a release clause of £19.8 million coming into effect next summer.

He has a £19.8million release clause that comes into effect next summer, and respected German newspaper Welt says Arsenal are leading the race to sign him.

The 25-year-old is widely considered to be one of the hottest talents in all of Europe. His scintillating form for Borussia Dortmund in the last two years has attracted interest from a host of clubs.

Fellow Premier League clubs Liverpool and Manchester United have both been linked with moves to bring the star to England.

The winger joined the German club from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012 for a reported fee of €17 million. His impressive performances have helped the club reach the UEFA Champions League final and win the DFL-Supercup in 2013.

His stats are equally as impressive, with the German scoring 42 goals in 90 appearances in all competitions. This form has also earned him 21 caps for his national side.

Arsenal are able to offer the German regular Champions League football along with a significant pay rise, with their much improved financial situation allowing them to offer more lucrative contracts.

In return, The Gunners would be getting footballer who can play in any attacking position, score goals and provide plenty of assists. The signing of Reus would make them a far more deadly attacking force, and combined with the likes of Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil it could make Arsenal genuine contenders both domestically and in Europe.
