Manchester United: One player that Louis van Gaal simply must keep

A must keep

It really does seem a match made in heaven. Manchester United have found Louis van Gaal and he seems ever more like the perfect catalyst to take United back to the top.

The players have so far responded brilliantly to their new manager and the Dutchman cannot fail to be impressed by the quality of the squad that he has at hand.

Not just in terms of the skill of the players in the squad – but also their application. Never have a Manchester United squad looked quite so hungry to impress.

One of the many players who must have impressed Louis van Gaal is the popular Mexican Javier Hernandez.

Whether or not he’s primed for a move, he’s worked his socks off on the preseason tour and looks fit as a fiddle.

He’s the one player Manchester United have who has a natural gift for making runs in behind the defence and has also got the sort of pace which the rest just don’t possess.

Chicharito constantly puts himself in the face of the opposition and he delivered a wonderful ball for Rooney to score the equaliser against Liverpool in The Champions Cup final.

Van Gaal gave what could be seen as a withering assessment of Chicharito’s chances before the last couple of games but we think that he may well have changed mind during the last 180 minutes of football – because Hernandez has been wonderful.

The most salient question now is perhaps not whether Louis wants to get rid but whether the player is happy to continue as a squad player in this coming season.

With overtures reportedly being made by Milan and Atletico Madrid the player clearly has options. But Manchester United should definitely retain his services because he offers a different dimension going forward.

His first touch sometimes lets him down and he hasn’t got the most powerful shot. But he’s a fox in the box and he really deserves to wear the Manchester United colours for his effort, application, hunger and professionalism.

If LvG plans to bring in another striker then the Mexican should be off. But Hernandez has surely forced a rethink with his latest performances.

Manchester United fans should Louis van Gaal keep Chicharito?

I really hope MU keeps Hernandez. He’s really good and well loved by the fans all over the world. Has wonderful attitude and gives his best. MU needs players like him. It will be a great disappointment to many people if he leaves.

Eh? Take off the rose tinted glasses and step back to look at the facts.

    1) Fact – Hernandez is now 4th choice striker at United.
    2) Fact – He’s a specialist poacher, and lacks versatility which LVG demands.
    3) Fact – He wants to start every game, but he can only get a start at United when someone else is injured.
    4) Fact – He is inconsistent, and while he can get results sometimes, he just as often fails to make any impact at all.

Since when MUST United keep a player like this? Yes, he’s a great ‘fox in the box’, but so are Rooney and RvP, both of whom can also do a LOT more than just poach. For a poacher to be invaluable, they need to be at the sort of level van Nistlerooy was.

Hernandez is a good player, but at a club like Manchester United, he is simply a useful squad player, and you can’t call anyone outside the starting XI indispensable.
