As things stand, Arsenal still need a central midfielder to make them more difficult for the big boys to play through.
But if Thomas Vermaelen does leave the club, as expected this summer, then Arsene Wenger may well go back into the market for another central defender. Although the club have signed the highly promising Calum Chambers, you would imagine that a bit more experience would be needed as cover for Koscielny and Mertesacker at the back.
One player who has been linked of late is Liverpool centre back Daniel Agger. He’s a Premier League veteran of some 232 appearances but, at 29, he still has lead in the pencil.
He’s a mobile, and technically strong player who also scores goals. In many respects he reminds us of..erm…Thomas Vermaelen. Which begs the question, why sell the Belgian in the first place! The answer is that Vermaelen isn’t happy to sit on the bench at this stage of his career. Which is understandable. What we don’t understand is why Wenger can’t rotate a bit more to keep this very good player happy.
Anyway, The Metro reports today that Arsenal may pursue Agger and he would obviously be a reliable squad member.

Let’s take a look at him in action. Arsenal fans: would you be happy to take Agger or should Wenger pull out all the stops to keep Vermaelen?
