Arsenal are now in the hunt for Atletico Madrid defensive midfielder Josuha Guilavogui. Arsene Wenger has reportedly made the 23-year-old a potential transfer target in his pursuit of signing a defensive midfielder according to The Express.
Arsenal eye move for unwanted Atletico Madrid defensive midfielder Josuha Guilavogui
While Arsenal were able to fend off smaller teams in The Premier League last season and achieve impressive results, they struggled against the so-called big clubs such as Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.
This was largely seen by pundits and fans as a problem of not having a strong defensive midfielder to protect the back four. The Gunners have typically always had a strong man in the middle of the park under Arsene Wenger, with the likes of Patrick Vieira and Gilberto Silva providing an additional barrier for attackers to get past.
However, the past few seasons had seen Arsenal without a dedicated player in that role. Instead, they have largely relied on Mikel Arteta to fulfil that role, despite that fact that he is more of a creative player.
While the return of Mathieu Flamini to the club last year proved that Wenger was aware of the problem in midfield, the 30-year-old Frenchman is not a long-term solution and is far from the imposing player many feel Arsenal need.
It is no wonder then that they have been linked with the likes of Sami Khedira and Morgan Schneiderlin over the summer transfer window. With deals for those two now looking unlikely, a move for Guilavogui makes sense.
The 6 ft 2 in France international would certainly fit the billing and could be available at a relatively cheap price.
He joined Atletico Madrid from French side St. Etienne but failed to nail down a regular place in the starting eleven. He was then loaned back to his former side, where he had made over 90 league appearances, in order to continue his development.
Arsenal though will have to fight off interest from Wolfsburg who are also reportedly interested in signing Guilavogui.
Let’s see some skills. Arsenal fans: keen?
