Barcelona fans have been used to the club signing bewitching attacking talents over the years.
The defence has always seemingly looked after itself and been well protected by a forward line which generally outscores the opposition.
But, last season, big cracks started to appear in the Barcelona defence and it was obvious that, regardless of which strikers the club signed this summer, they would have to leave some money in the kitty for defensive reinforcements.
Jeremy Mathieu has signed a contract with Barcelona recently but you do feel that at least one more defender will come in before the end of the transfer window.
Various names have been thrown around on this subject, but we believe that Mats Hummels would be by far the best defender Barcelona could sign this summer.
Recent reports of the Hummels shirt being sold in Barcelona could be wide of the mark but there does seem to be an increasing chance of the club signing the majestic defender.
English bookmaker SkyBet had Man United as favourites for his signature for a long period. But Barcelona are now odds on favourites to bring Hummels to The Camp Nou this summer at 8/11.
Hummels is a ball-playing centre back who also knows how to do the dirty work. He offers genuine goal threat too. But, in terms of technique, we think that he would fit right in at Barcelona.

If we sign him then Mathieu can be back up, ’cause let’s face it he’s too old. I would rather let Bartra have a go if we don’t sign another PROPER defender: Stefan De Vrij or Hummels.
