Worth the cash

You would expect that Manchester United will at least one ‘Hollywood’ signing this summer in a vigorous attempt to get straight back into The Champions League. Many hope that will be Arturo Vidal but there is of course room for two new megastars.

And, with each passing day, it seems more likely that Manchetser United will be welcoming Argenitna starAngel Di Maria into the fold.

He has been sternly linked with Manchester United over the last few weeks and latest reports suggest that Manchester United have agreed personal terms with the player, with only a transfer fee left to be ironed out.

The Metro says:

Angel Di Maria has edged a step closer to joining Manchester United after reportedly accepting the club’s £150,000-a-week contract offer.

Di Maria, nicknamed ‘El Fideo‘ (The Noodle – as he is so skinny) in his homeland, has had a mixed bag of a World Cup.

He has made some bizarre errors and, at times looked very erratic, but he has also been one of Argentina’s most potent attacking threats.

At 27 he’s just had his best season for Real Madrid with 11 goals and 26 assists in all competitions. He’s also known for his work ethic and is a natural athlete with great durability.

But with Arsenal sealing a deal for Alexis Sanchez for a fee of around £30-35m the question remains whether Di Maria would represent good value at a mooted £40m fee.

But if he can get Manchester United back to the top of the table by next May then all those questions will have been answered with a resounding ‘Yes’.

Let’s see him in action. Manchester United fans: worth the money?

If Di Maria is a Hollywood signing God help us!
Overrated, vastly overpriced, the only thing you can’t say about him is that he’s overweight.
Get Vidal, get Cavani, get rid of Rooney, Welbeck, Smalling and Rafael.

Di Maria is only 2 years into a 6 year contract with Real, they dont have to sell; United are out of Europe and have a squad full of under performing and second rate players. It’s well known United have the biggest sponsorship deals in football, are desperate following last seasons poor results and have a big budget to blow on shiny galactico’s but so have PSG, Monaco, Inter, City, Chelsea etc. United don’t have any players Real are interested in since they took Ronaldo off our hands but want Rodriguez so it’s going to be cash up front…..that’s why we will have to pay over the odds for ANY player this Summer. We don’t do it as often as Real, City or P’S but we’ve got a long history of splurging money on players, quite a few of whom haven’t worked out, some, like Zaha, Powell and Bebe have played a handful of games between them and will probably soon be moved on along with Fellaini and either Kagawa or Mata as well as the deadwood. We’ve spent £130- £135m (depending on which sources you read) on our last 4 acquisitions…its no wonder when Woodward comes sniffing around that the € signs light up in various Chairmen, Agents and players eyes.

Sami khedira, Contrao and Mat Hummels are enough for the season given the versatility of Contrao. Chance should be given to Nick Powel and Jesse Lingard.

I have no objection to signing a quality wide player such as Di Maria clearly is but our priority has to be to further strengthen midfield and central defence. As yet we can’t compete with the likes of City in having proven quality down the spine of the team. Yes, sign di Maria but prioritise players like Vidal and either Hummels or Thiago Silva first. Having said all that Van Gaal has shown his quality at the World Cup and I, for one, trust in his judgement.

Man U desperately need a world class central midfield, world class central defense and winger of the same class. I could mention a few but I would rather leave the selection to LVG.
